Easy Pencil Skirt with Sash

Instructions:
1. Purchase 1.5 yards of stretchy knit fabric (this should be more than enough)
2. Gather materials: fabric, scissors, coordinating thread, sewing machine, yard stick or ruler and pins.
3. Take your waist measurement, then measure the length (where you would like or you skirt to stop)
4. Using your yardstick, begin drawing out your skirt pieces from the fold of the fabric just like the picture below. Skirt: waist measurement x your length; Waistband: Waist measurement - 2in x 6in (depending on how wide you want your waistband to be); Sash: 20in x 6in
5. Beginning with you skirt piece, lay fabric with right sides together and sew straight down the opening with a 5/8" seam allowance.  Your skirt should look like a tube.  At this point, try on your skirt to make sure it fits just the way you want it.  If it does not fit like a glove, Use pins to help guide you on how much you need to take in.  Using your last seam as a guide, sew down your skirt again using 5/8" seam allowance.
6. Fold your waistband in half lengthwise(long sides touching) (with RST) and sew down that seam using 5/8" seam allowance.  You should have a tube.  Pull you waistband right side out.
7. Pull your skirt right side out.  Place your skirt through the middle opening of the waistband, match the seams and pin (RST).  Pin completely around the skirt and waistband then sew around the circle using a zigzag stitch. FYI: you will have to tug at the waistband a little as you are sewing. Once you finish sewing, iron the seam open and flip your waistband up.  Your skirt is completed.  Now all that is left is the sash.  Note: I did not hem my skirt because it's a knit and will not fray.  If you would like to hem your skirt, you can do so now.
8. Fold your sash in half lengthwise just like we did with the waistband.  Pin.  Starting from one of the short sides, sew each opening (short and long) of the sash using a 5/8" seam allowance.  Remember to pivot at the corners. Note: THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: leave an opening of about 1" in the middle of the waistband in order to pull the waistband right side out. Continue sewing around the waistband.  Once you are done, pull the waistband right side out, either hand stitch or sew your opening closed. Your easy pencil skirt is done!!!!
